City
Podgorica
Podgorica (Cyrillic: ??????????????????, pronounced [p??d??oritsa]; lit. 'under the hill') is the capital and largest city of Montenegro. The city was formerly known as Titograd (Cyrillic: ????????????????, pronounced [t??to??ra??d]) between 1946 and 1992???in the period that Montenegro formed, as the Socialist Republic of Montenegro in honour of Marshal Josip Broz Tito. The city was largely destroyed during the bombing of Podgorica in World War II and accordingly the city is now dominated by architecture from the following decades of communism. Further but less substantial damage was caused by the 1999 bombing by NATO forces.
